Project 562
Project 562 is an endeavor to photograph and document each unique Tribal Nation in the United States, founded by Matika Wilbur. == Description == Project 562 is named for the number of federally recognized tribes as of its start date in 2012. It is an effort photograph members of every Native American tribe in the United States, in order to counteract media representations which predominantly reflect the stereotypical perception of Native Americans. Project founder Matika Wilbur aims to draw attention to the fact that the historic, stereotypical image does not reflect the current status or diversity of indigenous people today. The goal of Project 562 is to highlight modern challenges along with the vast array of culture and tradition as presented in each tribe’s unique voice. The ‘vanishing race’ of Native Indians was first introduced by Edward S. Curtis who set off in the early 1900s to photograph Native Indians. Curtis’ first photograph of Navajo on horseback riding away was titled “The Vanishing Race" and the literal meaning of the title has been reflected throughout history. Presented as a genuine representation, evidence of white culture were removed and Curtis's photographs were staged to present the story of what he thought represented Indians prior to colonization. Project 562 has been described as engaging in a dialogue with Curtis' work. “I can see the importance of Curtis’s work,” Wilbur was quoted as saying in an interview with the New York Times. “But the inaccuracy of how we are portrayed just doesn’t seem fair.”
